5 Quick Ways to Get Your Business on Mobile

Did you know that out of the 7 billion people on the planet…

4.5 billion own a mobile phone, but only 4.2 billion own a toothbrush?

I’m not sure whether to be disgusted or amused.

Both I think.

Mobile marketing is seriously the way to go.

(As is oral hygiene, but let’s leave that for another day…)

I mean, 70% of all mobile searches are acted upon within an hour while only 30% receive action via traditional searches.

That’s the power of mobile marketing.

Yet so many people are still not reaping the benefits of it yet.

When you introduce the idea of social media, companies and individuals are more than comfortable with Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. And they have no problem jumping in and starting up marketing campaigns.

But mention mobile marketing and they totally shy away.

Why?

Because they think it’s too technical and so fear it.

Well the thing is, there’s really nothing to be afraid of.

Here are 5 quick ways to get your business on mobile:

Step 1: Make your website mobile-friendly

Now if you don’t have the budget to completely re-design your existing website, then here are some easy changes you can make to your site:

- Buttons. Everything is smaller on mobile. And it can be such a pain trying to press a button with an already fat finger only to make it feel fatter because nothing gets clicked. By simply increasing the size of the buttons you can help mobile users navigate your site.

- Fonts & Layout. Tiny fonts are hard to read on mobile. Stupid fonts are hard to read period. Pick one that is easy to read, slightly larger than usual and has a contrasted background color.

- Image Size. Really big images take ages to load on mobile. And if you have too many, it’ll also take ages to scroll past them to reach your content. Do a little experimenting to find the optimal size that fits nicely both on a computer and mobile.

- Flash. Hmmmmm… no.

Step 2: Research your competitors

You know your niche. You know your competitors. Now look at what they’re doing on mobile.

Don’t get spiteful and jealous.

If they have an app, install it.

If they have a mobile-friendly site, visit it.

If it’s awesome, get inspired and emulate.

If it’s terrible, then be the one that stands out as being the go-to mobile-friendly brand in your niche.

Step 3: Start using mobile media

If you don’t already have a smartphone then I don’t know why you’re reading this blog.

Surf through your phone, shop online, use phone apps.

Get accustomed to the mobile world so that you can be in the position of your customers.

See what the big deal is and understand why it’s one of the fastest growing markets.

Step 4: Claim your business on location-based applications

I’m talking Google, Foursquare, Facebook Places

It’s easy to do and has great benefits.

Take Foursquare for example.

It’s the leading location-based social network with 20 million users. By listing your business there, people can check into your location through the mobile app.

The moment they check into your business, it can be shared with their Foursquare friends, Facebook friends and Twitter followers.

Do I really need to explain the benefits of this?

Step 5: Read up on mobile media

Starting with this blog.

Which blog?

My blog.

Yup.

Knowledge is power.

Just remember that knowledge is useless without action.

So even if you become an expert on the theories and strategies of mobile media, it won’t increase your profits at all unless you actually implement them!
