Vine: The New Video App on Twitter

Twitter added a new feature last week when they introduced Vine to their users. Basically Vine is a mobile service that allows you to create videos that last up to six seconds and will repeat on loop.

The app is rated 12+ so is meant to be suitable for everyone aged 12 and above. Currently it’s only available on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and was launched in the App Store on Tuesday.

For marketers it’s adds another dimension to a simple tweet message, past the 140 characters we all so lament over. I mean, if a picture tells a thousand words, how much is a video is worth?

Imagine being an affiliate for Mike Chang’s Six Pack Shortcuts and being able to upload a 6 second time lapse video of a flabby belly morphing into six pack abs. Simple, to the point and surely effective.

Of course the app is not without flaws.

Vine on Twitter

On Tuesday Twitter had to issue an apology after a hardcore pornographic video was featured on Vine’s ‘Editor’s Picks’ section the day before. I guess that’s the danger when you mix social network and free video. Trolls.

Just last month the image-sharing app called 500px was banned from the App Store after 16 months of being on the market because Apple was afraid it was too easy for people to share porn.

Anyway, I think Vine is a great marketing tool we should all look into. A few short days after it’s launch it already made it into the popular list and looks to be a mainstay in the social networking scene.
